U.K. To Establish Panel To Follow Through On Aid To Africa
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer London, England (AHN) - British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is setting up a panel to ensure the U.K. makes good on its promises of aid to Africa. PM Blair will bring United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, entertainment promoter, Bob Geldof and Nigeria's President Obasanjo together in a panel backed by U.S. billionaire, Bill Gates. According to Blair, the panel will "monitor issues such as debt and trade," and keep Africa from "slipping down the global priority list." Blair says, "There is an enormous amount of work to do. I am under no illusions that we set very ambitious goals..." "We have made good progress but it is going to take an enormous amount of work in years to come to alleviate poverty in Africa and tackle climate change." According to the BBC, the new panel's focus will be tracking progress on promises made at last year's G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. The meeting was lobbied by a high profile "Make Poverty History" drive, which included the Live8 concert run by campaigner and musician Mr Geldof.
