Journalists In Egypt Receive Prison Sentences
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Two journalists have been sentenced to a year in prison, after defaming Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak. Chief Editor of the Al-Dustour newspaper, Ibrahim Issa and reporter Sahar Zaki were found guilty of "insulting and harming the president and the Egyptian people," after an April report criticizing the President's handling of public money. The report centered on a lawsuit, brought by Said Abdullah, accusing President Mubarak of misusing public funds during privatization efforts of state-owned companies. Furthermore, Said Abdullah, also received a year in prison for filing the charges. The prison time also comes with a fine, as all three men are charged 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($1,743 USD) According to the BBC, Al-Dustour is an independent weekly paper which returned to newspaper stands last year after a seven-year ban for criticizing the government.
