Ferry Sinks Off The Sumatra Coast, Dozens Saved But 43 Still Missing
Hector Duarte Jr. - All Headline News Staff Reporter Sumatra, Indonesia (AHN) - A ferry carrying an estimated 116 people sunk off the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Thursday. A Navy spokesman says rescuers picked 73 people from the water, but there is an additional 43 missing. The boat went down in heavy seas as it made its way to the island of Nias, off the western coast of Sumatra. Lt-Col Jaka Sentosa says, "The information we have received is that the boat sprang a leak and that the weather was very bad." He adds that two Navy vessels were sent to the scene, but rescue efforts were hampered by high waves. Ferry travel is common throughout Indonesia, but safety standards can be low and vessels are often over-crowded.
