Two Top Officials Resign At The Vatican
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Vatican City, (AHN) - Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, and will appoint Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B., the archbishop of Genova, Italy, as the new secretary of State. According to the Vatican, the Holy Father, in accordance with Canon 354 of the Code of Canon Law, has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Sodano, requesting him, nonetheless, to remain in office until September 15, 2006, with all the faculties inherent to that role. On the 15th, Pope Benedict XVI will apopint Cardinal Bertone to the posirion, and according to officials, "his Holiness will receive in audience the superiors and officials of the Secretariat of State in order to render public thanks to Cardinal Angelo Sodano for his long and generous service to the Holy See, and to present them to the new secretary of State." Furthermore, Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, president of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican City State, has resigned. The Pope will replace him with Archbishop Giovanni Ljolo, secretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State.
