Tamil Tigers To Uphold Truce In Sri Lanka
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer Colombo, Sri Lanka (AHN) - The Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebels informed peace broker Norway that they will uphold the troubled ceasefire, but the fate of the European Union member states in the monitoring mission was up for review. The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said in a written message to the Norwegians that they will abide by the truce and support the peace process. However, the fate of monitors from Denmark, Finland and Sweden, all three members of the European Union which banned the Tigers last month, will be discussed tomorrow with Norway's envoy Hans Brattskar, LTTE spokesman S. Puleedevan said. Norway asked both the government and the LTTE earlier this month to re-affirm their commitment to the peace process after failing to arrange a face-to-face meeting between the two parties in Oslo. According to Press Trust of India sources, the meeting was called to discuss the safety of truce monitors from five Nordic nations after close calls they had amid an upsurge in violence that has claimed over 800 lives since December. Meanwhile the Sri Lankan government had invited the LTTE rebels for a new round of peace negotiations amid the escalation of violence and the fear that the island was slowly drifting back into full scale hostilities.
