Cuban Official Sentenced To 12 Years In Jail For Misappropriation Of Influence

Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer Havana, Cuba (AHN) - A Communist party official was sentenced to 12 years in prison for using influence to obtain benefits, the party said Wednesday. Juan Carlos Robinson Agramonte, who was expelled from his position of secretary for the Santiago Province in April, pleaded guilty to influence-peddling in a trial in Havana on Friday. Robinson Agramonte, among the youngest members of the ruling Politburo party before being kicked out of elite body was widely regarded as an example of the country's political future now is being spoken about in less than favorable conditions. The official Granma newspaper did not specifically state what benefits Robinson Agramonte obtained or how he used his influence to get them. However its reports say, "It was demonstrated that Robinson Agramonte, in the open process of his ideological weakening and with abuse of his position, forgot his high responsibilities and the integrity demanded of a revolutionary cadre and used his influence to obtain benefits." The AP reports the Politburo political party on Wednesday felt that Robinson Agramonte should serve as an example for those who attempt to violate the law. The party leadership says, "He who does so will inexorably receive the weight of revolutionary justice."
