India Eyes Top UN Job
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - As India continues to vie for a permanent position on the United Nations Security Council, India announced the nomination of Shashi Tharoor, the present UN Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information for the prestigious post of Secretary General of the world body. The decision to field the famous 50 year old author comes comes with an assertion that under the principle of regional rotation, the next Secretary General of the UN should be from Asia. If elected Tharoor shall be the youngest ever Secretary General. He faces competition from at least three other Asian candidates Sri Lanka's Jayantha Dhanapala, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirthai and South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moo. Exuding confidence of getting elected to the world body's top post and refusing to comment on candidates nominated by other countries, including some of India's allies Tharoor said "We stand on our own records to take the responsibility of the top post.... As far as India is concerned, we would not have been in the race if we did not have a chance." He also said adding he would not comment on the qualifications of other candidates as it was "inappropriate" Press Trust of India sources reported.
