France Refuses To Take A Stand On India's Candidature For UN Top Post
Ankit Gupta - All Headline News Staff Writer New Delhi, India (AHN) - Dominique Girard, French Ambassador to India told Press Trust of India sources that it was " too early" to take a stand on India's nomination of Shashi Tharoor to the post of U.N. Secretary General. "Yes we are intently following the developments after Shashi Tharoor's nomination by India. We consider Tharoor a friend of France. However, the race has just begun and it is too early to take a stand," French Ambassador said. Adding to his statement he also said that other countries might also field "capable candidates" and that France will decide on the issue only after "properly observing" the situation. Saying that France would not field a candidate, Girard said that Paris will follow the "convention" in the UN by which permanent members of the world body do not usually field a candidate to the UN top post. The French Ambassador also said that he did not think that India's move to field a candidate for the UN top position would hamper it's chances of getting a permanent membership of the UN Security Council, it should not have "impact on anything else" he said.
