Myanmar Could Be Reported To UN Security Council
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Staff Writer Putrajaya, Malaysia (AHN) -- Military-ruled Myanmar could be reported to the UN Security Council for declining to allow democracy and free Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, according to a top UN official. Previously, the UN has exerted efforts to coordinate the government and Suu Kyi's party. A number of UN members, have been urging to bring the Southeast Asian nation to the Security Council for sanctions. Brown adds, "Certainly with Myanmar, it has been one of the slowest, most glacial in terms of trying to get political progress." Suu Kyi, a 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is one of the world's prominent political figures. She is already spending 10 years in prison. The AP reports that the United Nations has tried, with dismal results, to bring about a reconciliation between the government and Suu Kyi's party. Recently, the government allowed UN envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, to visit the country. Gambari also met with Suu Kyi, the first foreign visitor to see her in more than two years. Brown said he hoped that Gambari's visit "is the beginning of a dialogue between the UN and the government." "We take that as an indication of goodwill on the part of the government to enter into a dialogue. But the proof will be in progress, whether or not this leads to further steps."
