Prosecutors Wrap Up Saddam Trial
Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - On Monday, the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants resumed in Baghdad with the prosecution making its closing arguments. All the defendants were reportedly present in the dock as proceedings began. According to the BBC, the move marks the beginning of wrapping up the case on behalf of Chief Judge Raouf Abdel Rahman. The trial began in October; its highlights include the killings of two defense lawyers, the resignation of a judge and public outburst from defendants. Final defense arguments are scheduled for July 10, when the five-judge panel will consider its verdict. Saddam and the others face death by hanging if found guilty for their roles in the killing of 148 Shi'ites after a 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam in the village of Dujail. Reuters says that once final statements are in, a five-judge panel is expected to adjourn to consider a verdict. There is a possibility that the sentence of execution for Hussein could be delayed by appeals.
