Iran: Still Considering Atomic Incentives
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Shanghai, China (AHN) - Iranian leader President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his country is still looking at a pack of incentives offered by western powers to get Tehran to stop uranium enrichment. Ahmadinejad told journalists, "My colleagues are carefully considering the package of proposals offered by the six countries to the Islamic Republic of Iran and in due time they will give the response." He cautiously welcomed the proposal saying the incentives are a way forward in the process of resolving the current nuclear standoff between his country and the west. He did not state a date when Iran would respond. Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the proposal did not include a deadline, but expected Iran to reply by the end of June. He added that the incentives require Iran to stop enrichment and begin negotiations. The U.N. Security will not meet on Iran while negotiations continue. Iran has claimed it plans to use enriched uranium to generate power for commercial use. Western nations suspect Iran could be planning to develop an atomic bomb. The IAEA investigation reports say uranium enriched in Iran is currently too high, further deepening suspicions over the real agenda behind Iran's nuclear program.
