Spain Extends 28.5 Million Euro Grant To Phils.
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Contributor Manila, Philippines (AHN)- A grant of 28.5 million euros has been extended by Spain to the Philippines to primarily fund social services including education, health, potable water, agriculture and food security, good governance for local governments and the environment. "A country cannot have real development if its people are without access to health services," said Leire Pajin Iraola, Spain's Secretary of State for International Cooperation, in a press briefing yesterday. According to the features of the grant, the Philippines must account for matching counterpart funds. The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) will handle the projects. "We want to fund the project designs of the country. We want to be part of it until the project is completed. We want to bind the bonding of two nations," she said. The grant will run from 2006 to 2008 under the Fifth Joint Commission. Since 1995, the Philippines has received 78.22 million euros from the Spanish government in the form of grants reports The Philippine Star. The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will work closely with the Fifth Joint Commission. The Spanish government also assures to continue supporting development assistance to Mindanao.
