WB Official: Cost Of Elections In Bangladesh Highest In The World
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - The World Bank (WB) country director Christine I Wallich has said election financing is a major source of corruption in Bangladesh and the cost of getting elected here is the highest in the world. "The high cost of elections breeds public corruption," Wallich told BDNEWS, a local news agency, in an exclusive interview in Dhaka. "There will be less pressure to use public resources (particularly in infrastructure) as a "cash cow" for a party or a candidate by making the election financing harder for corrupt politicians and parties who divert funds," she said. She added auditing the accounts of political parties and publicly disseminating of the information would be an important step to check widespread corruption in the country. "A more transparent election financing system would have tangible benefits... This will be good for intended beneficiaries as well as for those of us who would like to help finance better infrastructure and public services," she noted. "The system of election financing needs urgent reform."
