Britain Deploys Additional 130 Troops To Afghanistan
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor London, England (AHN) - The British government on Thursday announced it will deploy 130 more troops to Afghanistan, prompting media inquiries whether there will be a larger deployment to bring an end to the escalating violence in the country. A senior military source said there would be no further massive deployment of troops to Afghanistan despite the new wave of violence that has hit the country. The source admitted there would be other small scale deployments to support the over 3000 British troops currently stationed in Afghanistan. The 130 troops who will be deployed are expected to help the troops secure an airbase in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold in the south of the country. Britain currently has a little extra military might in the region, given that it has begun the southern Afghanistan operation without concluding its mission in the south of Iraq. The British mission in Afghanistan leads NATO peacekeepers across the troubled regions in the south. It is also charged with Taliban insurgents in the drug producing Helmand province. Other U.S. allies including the Netherlands and Canada also have troops deployed in southern Afghanistan. This has raised concerns over the peacekeepers role, whether they would battle insurgents or strive to maintain peace.
