Iranian Police Arrest 70 At Women's Rights Protest
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Tehran, Iran (AHN) - The Iranian judiciary on Tuesday announced police had detained 70 people arrested during protests to advocate women's rights and it would investigate allegations that police had beaten some of the protesters. While the judiciary said it would investigate allegations that some protesters were beaten, Reuters reported one of its Iranian reporters present at the scene saw police beating people. Reports estimate about 100 women including some men participated at the Monday gathering to protest against Iran's Islamic laws that discriminate against women. One of the women said, "I am against laws that openly discriminate against women." Government officials say 42 women are currently detained. The reasons mentioned for the protest included the complicated divorce procedures and difficulties involved in getting guardianship for children after divorce. Factions within the protest advocated other reasons like inheritance laws, and the fact that courts consider female testimonies to be weaker than that of their male counterparts. Although there is still discrimination against women in Iran, the situation has slightly improved and women are now allowed to be gainfully employed.
