WB Satisfied Over Progress In Girls' Education in Bangladesh
Siddique Islam - All Headline News Foreign Correspondent Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - The World Bank (WB) on Monday expressed its satisfaction over the progress so far made in the second phase of the Female Secondary School Assistance Project (FSSAP) in Bangladesh. "An IDA, a WB's arm to provide soft loan, Mission carried out a supervision work of this project in mid-May and found the FSSAP is making satisfactory progress," the official sources in the WB Dhaka office said here on the day. Educational attainments for girls in Bangladesh were among the lowest in the world until the early 1990s. In the last decade the situation has been transformed and the country is now a global leader in girl's education. In 1993, the WB began supporting the government's stipend program under the FSSAP in 118 upazilas in Bangladesh and currently, it is supporting the second part of the FSSAP being implemented in 119 upazilas since 2002. Total cost of the project is US$ 144.6 million and the WB is contributing a US$ 120.6 million interest-free credit, the sources added. Under the project, around 800,000 girls are receiving stipends currently while head teachers are also receiving training on management and academic supervision, the WB sources noted.
