6.2 Earthquake Hits South-western Japan
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Five people were injured and local railway services halted, after a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit several Japanese cities including Hiroshima early Monday. Experts said the quake's epicenter was traced back to the Oita prefecture, 500 miles from Tokyo. Although earthquakes are common in Japan, the country's seismic centers did not issue any warnings before the Monday quake jolted the cities. The 6.2 tremors were close to the 6.3, which killed several thousands in Indonesia. Japan is set to resist earthquakes, as most of the country's infrastructure has been developed to withstand quakes. This helped to reduce the number of casualties. An 82-year-old woman broke her leg, while a student sustained a minor head injury when a falling object dropped on his head. The national meteorological agency did not forecast major after shocks. The BBC quotes an official saying, "Aftershocks will happen but we're not predicting strong ones that could cause serious damages."
