Parliament Strips Veto Power From Nepal's King
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) - A unanimous vote by Nepal's parliament has taken away the royal power of veto. According to ministers, the power Nepal's King Gyanendra once had in parliament had been eliminated. Now, lawmakers in Nepal can sign bills into law without royal approval, and the King's power to reject legislation is gone. Legislator and Communist Party member, Ram Baran Yadav explains, "The concept of king in parliament has been abolished through law." Speaker, Subash Nemwang, says, "With the approval of the regulation, a new rule has been made that full executive power of the state is centered on the council of ministers and the house holds legislative power." The move is the latest after Gyanendra gave up absolute rule and reinstated the parliament in April.
