Peruvian Villagers Evacuated Due To Volcanic Activity
Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Contributor Lima, Peru (AHN) - Over 400 villagers were evacuated due to increased activity by the Ubinas volcano in southern Peru, officials said. The volcano, which is located about 470 miles southeast of the Peruvian capital of Lima, last erupted April 14, sending ash about 2,600 feet into the air, the AP reports. Jose Acosta, a Civil Defense Institute official, said Saturday the people evacuated to a camp six miles from their village where they were given tents, blankets and food. Acosta said about 150 families will be evacuated by Saturday, but will be permitted to return to their homes if the threat lessens.
