20,000 Protesters March On Taiwan's Presidential Office
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Taipei, Taiwan (AHN) - A scandal involving Taiwan's President and insider trading, has caused 20,000 people to take to the streets and demand his resignation. Protesters want a referendum to remove President Chen Shui-bian, and marched on to the Presidential Office building Saturday. The scandal comes after Chen's son-in-law, Chao Chien-min, was detained on suspicion of insider trading, followed by allegations the activity goes as far as the first lady Wu Shu-chen, herself. While the President has yet to be linked to any wrongdoing, Ma Ying-Jeou, leader of the main opposition Nationalist Party, believes, "If a president isn't fit to rule, you can recall him. He doesn't have to commit a criminal act." According to Forbes, the recall referendum can only take place if two-thirds of Taiwan's 225-seat legislature approve it. The opposition would need the support of the 10 independent lawmakers and another 25 from Chen's Democratic Progressive Party to achieve the required majority.
