Japanese Workers Lack Sleep
Josephine Roque - All Headline News Contributor Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Japanese workers report lack of sleep and efficiency reduced by as much as about 40 percent. This led to frequent accidents, lateness and absenteeism. Lack of sleep is part of Japan's corporate culture with the word "karoshi," or death from overwork existing in their vocabulary. According to the survey, symptoms of lack of sleep cost the country an estimated $30 billion a year. "Not everyone who is sleepy at work is lazy. It's hard to tell your boss that you are sleepy, but ignoring the problem can lead to losses in the long run," said Makoto Uchiyama, professor and chairman of the department of neuropsychiatry at Nihon University School of Medicine, who conducted the survey. The survey came from a sample of some 3,075 workers at a chemical company on their sleeping and working habits for a month.
