U.S. Concerned Over Burmese Opposition Leader's Health
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Washington, D.C. (AHN) - A U.S. State Department spokesman is expressing concern over the health of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi after reports emerged that she was hospitalized. Spokesman Sean McCormack says he could not confirm the reports, but he is calling upon Burma's military leaders to assure she has received medical assistance. McCormack says, "We have seen those reports... We are, of course, very concerned." He adds, "We would call upon the Burmese government to provide Aung San Suu Kyi any and all medical assistance that she might need and to do so expeditiously and to ensure her safety during any treatment." BBC News reports Burma has held Ms. Suu Kyi under house arrest since May 2003. Her detention was recently extended for another year. She has spent 10 of the last 16 years under house arrest. The National League for Democracy won the 1990 elections by a wide margin. But the ruling junta refused to recognize the results.
