Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Contributor Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (AHN) - A shootout between police and drug gangs injured 17 children Wednesday. The incident occurred when drug gangs opened fire near the school in a Rio shantytown as police stopped a motorcycle driver for a routine search. The Associated Press quotes police as saying it did not return fire and the victims were wounded by the gangs. Six of the students, mostly 13 years of age, were struck by stray bullets. Some were hurt by broken glass and debris in their classroom. Gunfights between police and drug gangs that control most of Rio are common. It is one of the world's most violent cities with a murder rate of around 50 per 100,000 residents.
