Australia Overrules Gay Marriages In Capitol
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Canberra, Australia (AHN) - Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Tuesday announced his government would outlaw gay marriages across the nation's capitol. Howard says marriage should be a union between a man and a woman. Reuters quotes Howard as saying, "Our view is very simple. We are not prepared to accept something which is a plain attempt to equate civil unions with marriage." The decision follows U.S. President George W. Bush's plan to overrule same sex marriages across the United States. Although the Australian law forbids gay marriages, its autonomous Australian Capitol Territory would have allowed same sex marriage under the cover of civil unions in its new laws. Civil unions give gay partners the same rights enjoyed by married couples.
