Iraq To Release 2500 Detainees
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki on Tuesday said the new government of national unity would release 2,500 detainees without enough evidence for prosecution. Maliki hopes their release will aid the new government achieve its goal of national reconciliation to some degree. He told reporters, "We hope they will abide by not violently objecting to the political process. This is a strong move which will encourage others." Most of the detainees are Sunnis, the faction who is mostly held responsible for the insurgent attacks on U.S.-led forces and the Iraqi security officers. The government admitted it had mistakenly arrested and detained some of the prisoners. They are to be set free from Iraqi and U.S.-guarded cells across the country.
