Dissident Afghan Police Kill 7 Colleagues
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Kandahar, Afghanistan (AHN) - Dissident Afghan policemen on Sunday gunned down seven colleagues before fleeing to join Taliban guerrillas fighting in the south of the country. According to officials, the incident happened on Sunday night, while all seven officers were asleep. Gulab Shah Alikhail, a provincial spokesman told Reuters, "The seven policemen were asleep when the other five jumped, killed them, took their arms and joined the Taliban." Shah said Afghan security forces are carrying out investigations to trace the escaped policemen. He added that intelligence sources confirmed the policemen had joined Taliban fighters. The last few weeks have seen a dramatic increase in Taliban uprisings. Twenty people were killed last week in an incident described as one of the worse riots after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. A coalition military truck whose breaks failed while descending on a hill hit and killed more than five people in Kabul. This sparked violence in the city, with civilians throwing stones at a coalition military convoy. Taliban fighters have vowed to topple President Hamid Karzai's government. Insurgent attacks have increased after NATO deployed more forces to maintain peace especially in Afghanistan troubled south.
