Violence Continues Despite Military Support
Megan Shannon - All Headline News Staff Writer Timor (AHN) - Gangs' violence was unaffected by Australian and Malaysian troops who came to ease the situation in Timor almost a week ago. Reports say the gangs, who have been known to burn homes, have remained relatively quiet the past few days. But their activity flared up again Sunday leaving Dili's flashpoint Comoro Bridge in flames. Malaysian troops along with Australian Black Hawk Helicopters responded only to find that most of the homes in the area were abandoned and looted. Residents were asked to evacuate last week when civilians were getting caught in the cross fire of gang violence. Soldiers reportedly called the violence a "turf war" between Timor's east and west districts and the media attention is fueling the mayhem breaking out there. The soldiers will soon be joined by 250 more Malaysian troops and 120 soldiers from Portugal and New Zealand.
