Mining Disaster Kills 17 in Turkey
Richard Rittierodt - All Headline News Contributor Ankara, Turkey (AHN) - According to a top official at the scene, 17 miners were killed when a methane gas explosion took place in a Western Turkey coal mine. Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said, "There were 57 people in the mine, 35 of them survived unharmed, five others were injured. Unfortunately, we have lost 17 people." Due to some safety violations, outdated equipment and high levels of methane gas, accidents in Turkish mines are not that uncommon. In 1992, 270 workers were killed during a gas explosion in what is Turkey's worst mining disaster.
