Colombian Soldiers Arrested For Fatally Shooting 10 Police Officers
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Bogota, Colombia (AHN) - Eight Colombian soldiers are arrested for the shooting deaths of 10 undercover police officers and a civilian. Soldiers say they mistook the police officers for traffickers and authorities thought it was an accidental shooting. BBC News reports a preliminary investigation suggests a connection between the soldiers and drug gangs. The Colombian police commandos were infiltrating a drug operation near the town of Jamundi when they came under fire from about 28 soldiers. Local authorities blamed the incident on a breakdown in communication between the security forces. President Alvaro Uribe urged an expedited investigation so "this doesn't turn into another Guaitarilla." In March 2004, soldiers in Guaitarilla fatally shot seven police officers and four civilians. Accusations emerged about cover-ups by the police and the military.
