Spain Halts Repatriation Of Senegalese Migrants
Yvonne Lee - All Headline News Staff Reporter Madrid, Spain (AHN) - Spain halts an operation to repatriate hundreds of illegal Senegalese migrants back home. BBC News reports Senegal refused to cooperate with Spain after the first group sent back from the Canary Islands complained of mistreatment. About 7,500 migrants have entered the Canary Islands this year. Some 1,000 more are assumed to have died making the treacherous journey in small boats. Some of the migrants say they were handcuffed and told they were on their way to Spain. Samba Ndao tells reporters, "We were handcuffed. Each of us were escorted by two policemen." He adds, "To our huge surprise, we landed in Dakar." Unnamed diplomats tell Reuters that convincing migrants to go home is difficult. A Dakar-based diplomat says, "If you tell these people that they are going to be flown back home, then they won't get on the plane."
