Iraqi Forces Crackdown On Basra Insurgents
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Basra, Iraq (AHN) - Iraqi security forces mounted check points and searched vehicles as they drove through the city of Basra on Thursday. The Prime Minister vowed to use an "iron fist" on Basra insurgents during a Wednesday visit to the city. Barely a week after he was sworn in, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki passed a state of a emergency in the city. He deployed his police and soldiers onto its streets, confirming his stern decision to let peace reign in the city. The Prime Minister traveled to Basra, with the motive of resolving internal disputes within the Shi'ite faction. Basra which used to be among Iraq's calm cities has recently transformed into a troubled region. Sectarian tension has split the city into factions. Those loyal to the Saddam regime support organized attacks on the region's oil potential.
