Iraqi PM Promises Massive Crack Down On Basra Guerillas

Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri Maliki on Wednesday vowed to crack down on anyone who jeopardizes security in the city of Basra.

Mr. Maliki who addressed the Iraqi people on a live TV broadcast said he will use an "iron fist" on those who violate peace in Basra.

The BBC reports Maliki said, "We shall strike with an iron fist on the heads of the gangs or those who tamper with security."

The Prime Minister traveled to Basra, with the motive of resolving internal disputes within the Shi'ite community.

Basra which used to be among Iraq's calm cities have recently transformed into a troubled zone. Sectarian tension has split the city into factions. Some factions support organized attacks on the region's oil exports.
