Indonesian Death Toll Reaches 5,800
Joanna Wypior - All Headline News Staff Reporter Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - Saturday's earthquake that rocked the island nation of Indonesia has killed over 5,800 people so far and left 200,000 homeless, according to officials. The majority of those killed lived in the Bantul district, south of Yogyakarta, on Indonesia's island of Java, where the massive 6.3 earthquake struck. According to United Nations team leader in Indonesia, Charlie Higgins, he believes the Indonesian government should be able to handle the crisis without the UN having to intervene. "The role here is very different to Aceh. This is not an overwhelming disaster for the authorities, certainly not at a national level, but not even at a provincial level. So it's a question of (the UN) supporting, very much, their lead", he tells Reuters. Meanwhile, donations from around the world have continued to arrive as the relief operation, involving at least 22 countries, gathered pace. In 2004, the Aceh province of Indonesia was also struck with tragedy after the deadly Tsunami that hit parts of central and southeast Asia left over 170,000 dead or missing.
