Violence In East Timor, President Assumes Emergency Powers
Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Dili, East Timor (AHN) - Conflict continues in East Timor, forcing President Xanana Gusmao to assume emergency powers, including direct control over the security forces, and the Interior Ministry. Street gangs have begun an open riot against police and Australian troops, sent to keep the peace. The past week alone saw 27 people killed and another 100 wounded, prompting the International Red Cross to estimate over 40,000 residents have been displaced. According to CNN, what began as an army mutiny has descended into street fights by rival gangs - from East and West Timor - who roamed the streets.
