Bomb Targeting Greek Minister Explodes, No Reported Injuries
Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Contributor Athens, Greece (AHN) - A powerful bomb apparently targeting Greek Culture Minister George Voulgarakis exploded in central Athens Tuesday, wrecking cars but causing no injuries, police said. According to a report by Reuters, Police said the bomb that had been detonated by a timer was "placed under a car about 70 meters (yards) from his house. It went off just before he left for work." Voulgarakis had been public order minister until February and his move to the Culture Ministry during a government reshuffle was widely seen as a demotion due to a phone tapping scandal that rocked Greece for weeks. The minister is also under pressure over claims made by 28 Pakistani immigrants, who said they were abducted and then tortured by Greek authorities at unknown locations after last year's London suicide bombings. However, the minister has denied any wrongdoing. Police said Voulgarakis was among a list of senior government officials considered possible targets and a police bomb squad was conducting the daily check of his street shortly before the explosion. There were no warning calls or claims of responsibility, the police official added.
