Saddam Trial Resumes With More Witnesses
Nji Che - All Headline News Contributor Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - The trial of deposed Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein and seven other officials of his regime reopened on Tuesday with more witnesses to defend him. Saddam and his aides are accused of crimes against humanity. They allegedly executed 148 Shi'ite men and children at Dujail. The incident was prompted by an unsuccessful 1982 assassination plot against Saddam. All the defendants have pleaded not guilty to the accusations levied on them. According to the local law, they could be sentenced to death by hanging if found guilty. Defense witnesses began taking the stand on May 15, following a three-week recess period after the prosecution.
