Vladikavkaz, Russia (AHN) A militant convicted of 331 deaths, most of which were children, during an attack on a Beslan school was sentenced to life in prison on Friday. According to the Associated Press, Nur-Pashi Kulayev was found guilty of shooting the children while they tried to escape and detonating a bomb which claimed many of the lives. The attack which took place on Sept 1, 2004 resulted in the loss of 331 lives, half of which were children, some suspected 31 militants, and 11 special force soldiers. The relatives of the victims criticized the verdict calling it superficial and a one-sided investigation ... meant only to establish the terrorists' and Kulayev's guilt." Prosecutors had demanded death penalty for the militant. However Judge Tamerlan Aguzarov ultimately sentenced him to life imprisonment due to a moratorium currently in place. Russia imposed a moratorium on executions when it joined the Council of Europe a decade ago.
