Kuwait (AHN) - For the first time in Kuwait's history, five women are running for seats in the parliamentary elections. One candidate, Rula Dashti, tells BBC News it is a historic day that marks the start of women's participation in Kuwaiti public life. After a 44-year ban, Kuwait's parliament voted last May to allow women to vote and become candidates for office. As a political crisis brews over reform, Kuwaiti lawmakers set elections for June 29. Dashti tells AFP news agency after filing her papers, "It's a dream come true and the actual beginning of Kuwati women's participation in public life." Kuwaiti ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah ordered the dissolution of parliament after the government and MPs began fighting over electoral reform. MPs were against a bill that would reduce electoral constituencies to 10 from the 25. Opponents want to lessen the number to five to combat vote buying.
