Washington DC (AHN) - A senior UN official who was allowed a rare meeting with Burma's imprisoned pro-democracy leader says there are signs the country is attempting to improve its relationship with the international community. BBC News reports Ibrahim Gambari was the first person since 2004 to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for 10 of the last 16 years. He says the meeting may indicate that Burma is willing to "open up a new chapter." Suu Kyi's term of house arrest is slated to end Saturday. She is leader of Burma's National League for Democracy. The party won a landslide victory in 1990, but military leaders refused to hand over power. Gambari, who is the United Nations undersecretary-general for political affairs, says if she is released it "would not necessarily lead to political instability."
