Amnesty International Criticizes Asian Block

London, England (AHN) - A report by Amnesty International released this week says Asian states are failing to protect the human rights of all people by maintaining laws that discriminate. The human rights group based out of London also charges Asian governments for failing to ensure that those who suffer discrimination have proper channels to redress. The Internet contributes to China's mention in the report. The group says China, which heavily monitors and even blocks many Web sites, prosecutes its citizens for posting political opinions or information embarrassing to the government. The report unveils how people charged with terrorism and 'state secrets' offenses in China are tried in secret. While in India, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act continues to allow the government there numerous widespread powers that had been previously denounced in annulled counter-terrorism legislation. The report concludes that ethnicity, gender, socio-economic factors and sexual identities al conspire to maintain a high sentiment of discrimination.
