North Korea Cancels Test Run Of Trains Across The Border

Seoul, South Korea (AHN) - North Korea says it wants to cancel a planned test run of trains across the border with South Korea. BBC News reports the trial run would have been the first time trains have crossed the border in more than 50 years. The test of the rail link was scheduled for Thursday. But on Wednesday, Pyongyang notified South Korean officials that it wanted the test runs canceled. The border between the two Koreas has been heavily fortified and virtually impenetrable since the Korean War ended. Since North Korea made the request, South Korean officials have reportedly held an emergency session on the issue. A cross-border rail link would require both sides to guarantee passenger safety. If it ever opens, South Korea could transport goods more cheaply, while the North could increase tourism.
