Senegal (AHN) - Senegal's navy arrests 60 traffickers who were trying to smuggle 1,500 migrant to Spain's Canary Islands. Navy Captain Jean-Baptiste Faye says the people were traveling in 19 wooden boats. He says, "With the closing of [routes through] Mauritania and Morocco, they are starting to leave more and more from Senegal." BBC News reports Spanish Ambassador Miguel Angel Fernandez Mazarambroz has been touring West Africa in an effort to stem the flow of migrants. He is trying to convince African governments to sign agreements making it easier to deport migrants. About 7,000 migrants have landed at the Canary Islands in 2006.
