Indian Workers Defy Deadline

Dubai, UAE (AHN)-- More than 8,000 Indian workers of a Brussels-based construction firm, striking work for better pay and perks continued with their protest for the fifth day, defying a government deadline to resume work. The employees of Besix Construction Company have been on strike since May 16 demanding a minimum salary of $272.3, food allowance of $81.69 and an annual vacation. Press Trust of India reports that on Friday, Dubai's permanent committee of labor affairs had set a deadline before the workers to return to work by today or face deportation. However, the laborers defied the deadline, saying they would not budge till they get their demands accepted and were ready for deportation.
