Possible Working Relationship Between Spanish Government And ETA

Madrid, Spain (AHN) - Spanish president Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced The start of the process of dialogue to achieve the end of violence with ETA. Zapatero gave the startling political news at a Socialist meeting in the Basque country in the northern region of Spain. ETA stands for the Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or Basque Homeland and Freedom. The separatist group, which recently announced a cease-fire, has been fighting for an independent socialist state for the last 30 years. The cease-fire and news of the proposed working arrangement between the government and the separatist group has the majority of Spaniards skeptical. A government poll showed that 53.9 percent of felt the ETAs plans still remain nefarious, while 43.1 percent were hopeful for peace.
