Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (AHN) - Hundreds of Brazilians took to the streets to protest a surge of gang violence. Sunday was declared a "Day of National Dignity" by demonstrators who gathered in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other major cities to protest the failure of politicians to crack down on organized crime. In a spree of attacks that began ten days ago, the first capital command gang killed 41 police officers and prison guards and burned dozens of city buses. Over the following days, police struck back, killing 109 suspected criminals, many in unclear circumstances. Eighteen prison inmates and four bystanders also died in violence.
