Beijing, China (AHN) An estimated 57 coalminers are said to be trapped underground at the Xinjing Coal Mine in the northern province of Shanxi. Senior Chinese officials accuse the mine of excessive and illegal mining. The accident happened on Thursday when the mine was hit by a sudden surge of floodwater. The Xinhua news agency said Sunday that 44 were people trapped but now raised that estimate to 57. Li Yizhong, director of the State Administration of Work Safety, told Xinhua news agency that the miners were working in a coal seam beyond the mine's approved limits and the illegally mined seam flooded. The mine was also producing above its approved capacity of 90,000 tons, having mined 130,000 tons between March 2 and May 18. A 200-member rescue team is searching for the missing miners and Xinhua said it did not know how many were believed to be alive.
