Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro (AHN) - The only former Yugoslavian republic still tied to Serbia, Montenegro, has begun voting on a referendum on independence. The people of Montenegro must give the pro-independence bloc at least 55 percent of the vote for a change to occur, and create the newest European state. However, many oppose independence, citing close cultural and economic ties to Serbia. In the voting booth, Montenegro's 670,000 citizens are asked, "Do you want Montenegro to be an independent state with full international and legal legitimacy?" Already, Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, has made repeated calls for independence, adding it will bring a faster entry into the European Union, and the economic boost such integration inevitably provides.
