Beijing, China (AHN) - The People's Republic of China has completed construction on the world's largest hydroelectricity project, the Three Gorges Dam. In a ceremony on live state television, Li Yongan, general manager of the Three Gorges Project Development Corp., admits, "Although the dam is now complete, we still have a long way to go and cannot become self-satisfied or relax our efforts in the least." "We need to continue to put quality and safety first." Often a controversial subject, over 100 people died during construction, and the government forcibly relocated 1.3 million people ahead of the dam's reservoir. According to Chinese officials, the project has cost $25 billion so far, and all 26 turbines should come online by 2009.
