Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Japanese media reports say Friday that North Korea may be planning to launch a long-range ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. NHK quotes unidentified South Korean officials as saying satellite pictures show signs of activity at a site in northeastern North Korea. They say it could mean they are preparing to firing a missile in the near future. Japan's top government spokesman, Shinzo Abe, says he could not comment on specific security issues. He adds, "At the moment, we do not believe that a launch is imminent." South Korea's defense ministry could not confirm the report. NHK says the missile looks like a Taepodong-2, which has a range of more than 4,200 miles. It would be capable of reaching the continental United States. U.S. government officials tell NHK that if the missile is modified, it could have a range of 9,300 miles. Kyodo news agency quoted Japanese government officials who said a launch could be imminent, and that the missile is likely a Taepodong-2.
