UNHCR And UNESCO Unite To Educate Afghan Children

Peshawar, Pakistan (AHN) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) signed a two-year agreement on Wednesday to work for improving the educational system for Afghan refugees in Pakistan, a local newspaper reported. Signed in Islamabad, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) states that UNHCR and UNESCO would strengthen their working relationship with other UN agencies and donors to attract funds and support for joint program, the Daily Times reported on Thursday. The MoU brings the two agencies together to help refugee children adapt to the Afghan educational system after their repatriation, through steps such as making their Pakistani school certificates recognizable in Afghanistan. UNHCR and UNESCO have agreed to work for improving the educational system for Afghan refugees by sharing technical advice and providing mutual assistance to the government of Pakistan and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), along with consultations with the Afghan government.
